NARAM History and Past Champions

In the beginning was NARAM-1 which was held 16-19 July 1959 in Denver, CO. The events were Altitude, Scale Altitude, Drag Race, Payload, Scale, Spot Landing, and Best Design. Harry Stine described how the original payloads were made melting solder. There was originally 6 made for use at NARAM-1 in 1959. Two were lost in the test contest prior to NARAM, so only four were available for NARAM. Stine said that people had to wait in line for the next available payload. One payload was lost during NARAM-1. In the end, there were three surviving payloads. Stine donated one to the Smithsonian. The only available engines in 1959 were Type A, Type B, and Type B Booster. 21 competitors at NARAM-1 and the national champion had 33 points. There was only two NAR sections, Mile-High (Denver) and Peak City (Colorado Springs).

In 1960, NARAM-2 had 27 competitors, and was held in Colorado Springs. The national champion trophy was called the "Holly Sugar Trophy" because it was sponsored by the Holly Sugar Company who employed the Contest Director, William S. Roe.

NARAM-3 was held in 1961 at Denver, CO.had a new fun even, Egglofting. The first recorded successful eggloft flight was after several failures, one of which was Stine. Paul Hans, using a Coaster F engine, first attempt resulted in an errant flight but the egg survived. The second flight was successful. NARAM-3 had 50 competitors. Vern Estes and John Schultz presented their R&D on their patented Boost Glider. Wes Walla presented an R&D on a helicopter recovery design that looks a lot like a two bladed Roto-Roc. (Note: The NARAM-52 Contest Director, Mike Konshak, attended both NARAM-2 and NARAM-3 as a teenager.)

The 1962 NARAM-4 was held at the United States Air Force Academy. After that, G. Harry Stine moved to the east coast and subsequent NARAMs were held outside of the founding state of Colorado making the NARAMs truly national. Colorado would again be hosts for NARAM-11 (1969), NARAM-42 (2001) and NARAM-52 (2011).
